PG Podcast - Episode 11 - Brad Miller on building long-lasting software in academia
August 2016 (assistant professor)
Brad Miller (@bnmnetp) is a professor of computer science at Luther College. In 2010, he received the presitious ACM Software Systems Award for his work on the GroupLens recommender system. In 2011, I first learned about Brad's then-emerging work in interactive digital textbooks when he emailed me to ask about ways to integrate Python Tutor into his project.
In this PG Podcast, Brad recounts the five-year history of Runestone Interactive, a digital textbook platform that he started in 2011 and has since grown into a service now used by hundreds of high schools and colleges, and over 13,000 students per day! Beyond highlighting his personal journey to develop this software, we reflect on the challenges of building and sustaining long-lasting software projects in academia, which is something that I deeply care about due to my work on Python Tutor.
