PG Podcast - Episode 20 - Cat Hicks on ethical data science
December 2016 (perspective of an assistant professor)
Cat Hicks (@grimalkina) is a researcher, analyst, and data scientist working in Google's People Operations group. Prior to starting at Google, Cat earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from UCSD and was an HCI postdoc in the Design Lab (where I now work). We barely missed working with one another since I was at Google while she was at UCSD; and by the time I arrived at UCSD, she had already gone to Google!
In this PG Podcast, we start by talking about the role of ethics in ensuring responsible data science and people-oriented research. Then we pivot into discussing the tremendous value that social science and psychology research can provide to the tech sector. Fortunately, we both agree that we want to work toward a future where data and technology can bring out the best of our humanity and not make us all bow down to our robotic overlords!
