To keep these websites up and running, make a donation using Patreon, PayPal, or credit/debit card.

Over the past decade, I've grown Python Tutor into one of the most widely-used free tools for learning to code. So far, over 3.5 million people from over 180 countries have used it to debug their code and to tutor one another in real time. In parallel, over the past 20+ years, I've grown into one of the most popular websites for science and engineering students, with over 500 articles, vlogs, and podcasts that are viewed nearly a million times each year. I love getting emails from people around the world who use these resources to excel in their classes, get into their dream schools, and get jobs that have changed their lives.

However, these websites cost significant amounts of money to run, and their fast-growing traffic makes it hard for me to keep paying for them by myself. Throughout the years, I've received many offers for custom advertising and sponsor deals, along with good opportunities to commercialize Python Tutor into a paid product. But I've always stubbornly held onto the conviction that educational resources like mine should be 100% free and not beholden to advertisers, sponsors, or investors.

In the end, the only funding model I'm comfortable with is one where generous people make donations to keep things free for everyone else. Here are some ways you can help.

Thanks for your help in keeping these websites up and running!

What will my donation be used for?

  1. Most importantly, paying web registration and hosting fees to keep Python Tutor and running so that millions of people each year can continue to benefit from them.
  2. Hiring transcription services to add captions and transcripts to the hundreds of educational videos that I produce.
  3. Upgrading my audio/video recording equipment as necessary.

What will I get for donating?

You'll get the gratitude of millions of current and future users of Python Tutor and, many of whom come from backgrounds where they cannot afford expensive universities or private tutors. (I don't believe in offering gimmicky prizes or personalized tech support in exchange for donations, since those subtly distort the incentives for both you and me.)

What will I NOT get for donating?

You will not receive preferential treatment in terms of requests for code features, articles, or video content. Please donate only if you would like to support current and future users of these sites.

Will I be put on a spammy mailing list after donating?

Absolutely not. I hate spam more than anything.

Why rely on donations? Can't you use grants to fund this work?

Not really. It's very hard to obtain grant funding to sustain this sort of nonprofit education and outreach work. Academic grants fund mostly research, and the vast majority of their budgets are used to pay my graduate students' salaries and tuition fees.
